Set in the rolling hills of the western Blue Ridge mountains, it has been the seat of Franklin County since it’s formation in 1786. Bordered by serene farmland and majestic forests, Rocky Mount is a thriving ‘big’ small town that serves as its county government, service and business center.

Beautiful community parks and churches entice visitors to want to stay and historic sites such as the Community and Hospitality Center, (formerly a train depot) and the open air Farmer’s Market at Citizen Square welcome everyone with open arms.

History

Named for a steep cliff near town, Rocky Mount was first settled in 1760, and originally was two adjacent villages, Rocky Mount and Mount Pleasant. By 1873, Rocky Mount has incorporated Mount Pleasant and the current city boundaries were created.

Blue Ridge Parkway

Gorgeous scenery and the chance to take advantage of many recreational opportunities make the Blue Ridge Parkway one of the most visited sections of the National Park System. Rocky Mount Farmer’s Market

At the heart of historic downtown Rocky Mount sits the Farmer’s Market at Citizen Square. The gateway to the Crook Road, Virignia’s Heritage Music Trail, the market is surrounded by unique shops, the main library and wealth of Rocky Mount history. Open six days a week, it features a variety of fresh produce, and baked goods, honey, jams, and jellies as well as arts and crafts, plants and fresh cut flowers. Veterans Memorial Park

Six years ago, local club members wanted to create a park to honor the veterans who have fought and served in the Armed Services. Today, the Veteran’s Memorial Park is a a gentle reminder of the sacrifice, the courage and the freedom of those soldiers who served their country and the ones who lost their lives.
